Suresh Raj: Sleeping tiger or marauding murderer?

Suresh Raj Sharma of KU always follows what the power centers of Nepal are doing. Recently, comrade Prachanda threatened,"No one should wake up the sleeping tiger." And our Suresh Raj has also claimed amongst close confidants that this blog is waking up a sleeping tiger. Suresh Raj still thinks that our expressions are disturbing him. I am wondering how he missed the meaning of our expressions. We are not disturbig him. Rather, we are plainly claiming that his existence as VC of KU is threatening, vitiating and disturbing the academia of Nepal. A vice-chancellor has resorted to using muscle power, tainted siblings, caused harrasment death in addition to systematic corruption. Is not enough for Nepal's academia to be disgraced and disturbed?

In our opinion, Suresh Raj is nothing more than a power hungry leech who will continue to suck at the cost of the academia. We had consistently been maintaining that he is resorting to politics. And he has done it brazenly and in full glare of public eye. Now, in today's senate meeting also, Suresh Raj is going to shake up the KU structure and going to hoist himself as first President of KU. From Prachanda to Madhav Nepal, there are many in Nepal waiting to be the first president of Nepal. But Suresh Raj is in such a hurry that he is going to hoist himself as the first president of KU. Why Suresh Raj is in such a great hurry? Things are difficult to comprehend. It is a bitter reality that Suresh Raj will have to leave it ultimately. Suresh Raj's own daughter has passed away recently. So, will Suresh Raj live for ever? Even if he manages everyone and everything, one thing is sure that Suresh Raj will never be able to manage his own end.

Like other mortals, Suresh Raj is also no different. It would be better if he understands it earlier becuase errors in life should be rectified when alive. Claiming oneself as a tiger is not enough if you can not avoid a brutal fact of life. For the sake of chair, one may murder staffs, beat faculties and defame critics, but one will never be eternal. Instead of understanding such inevitabilities, Suresh Raj is now going to destroy KU for ever by making it a fully private property.

People may claim that we are jealous of Suresh Raj's success. There are many in Nepal who consider clinging to the post as the main yardstick of success. Sorry, we beg to differ from these people. We consider that academia should be devoid of hypocrites and murderers who are harrasing faculties and staffs in addition to killing the very motto of academia. Was KU ever created to make Suresh Raj indispensible? Everyone knows the answer. Yet, there are so much of manipulations and machinations that we are going to witness a marauding of a murderer as KU's first president. Even then, we are sure that Suresh Raj will never claim that KU is his private property. He can do everything by greasing the palms of politicians, industrialists, so called social worker, but he can never claim that KU is his private property. After being the first president, We challenge you Suresh Raj to claim that KU is your personal property?

Leaving education to the market

One school of thought is claiming that University Education must be left to the market forces. What market does will be the deciding factor. This is true according to the paradigms of liberalised economy. But in Nepal, we are yet to evolve into a responsive academia. Our teachers, faculty members, deans, registrars, controllers and VCs are still filthy humans. They are yet to evolve into responsive citizens. We have teachers who happen to be so as they happened to be sons, daughters and nephews of VCs and registrars. That alone would have been fine if they have clean track record. Their names have consistently appeared in drug abuse, suspected bone-relation cases and so on. Our deans are so cruel that even in 21st century they are sticking to archaic Hindu religious Manuvaad and killing innocent Nepalis merely for being a dalit (an opperessed community in Hindu society.) Our exam controllers have still remained drenched in alcohol while beating their wives blue and pale. Our registrars are so corrupt that the palatial buildings they have constructed with corrupt money is used for filthy relations between the siblings. And what to talk about VCs like Suresh Raj Sharma? He took advantage of his own students, indulged in unhealthy and filthy relations in the name of educating and ultimately married to save his face when the society started to question him. And after a long hiatus, he is penning articles claiming that he is a Sadhu (a saint.)

KU is a typical case of Nepal's academia not being at par with world class institutions and Universities. No doubt, KU students have exhibited very good performance. That is based on their own merit. And, definitely, they were not inspired by Suresh Raj. In that case, instead of charting new paths of success, our students, too, would have been busy practicing nepotism, abusing drugs, indulging in corruption, intoxicating in booze and killing others as a racist. KU students did well inspite of having stayed close to Suresh Raj. And for this credits go to the faculties, teachers, teaching staffs, and administrative staffs who were influential in shaping the mindsets of the students with their exemplary role and impeccable character in KU. So, leaving the students, teachers and staffs aside, we have to compare the performances of our VCs, deans, registrars and all other honchos who are considered powerful only in Nepal, with those of western countries and even India. In no other country, these administrative posts are given importance but in KU and in Nepal only, these posts get so much importance. So, before talking about deregulation and leaving the academia to the private sector, a worldwide phenomenon, we need to evaluate what kind of players are here in Nepal.

Suresh Raj has shown that leaving the education sector to so called private sector is not healthy. Rather it is fraught with grave dangers. He has exemplified that if this is done in Nepal, no market ever evolves because of syndication and cartelism. Friends might have seen how medical professionals behaved recently. The case of Nobel Medical college is a prime example in hand. Board members, whether they are Ph.D.s or Medicos, do not desist from using goons and political connections. This has happened because of the greed for money. Whoever controls the board becomes wealthier in Nepal. Suresh Raj of KU, Umesh Shrestha of PABSON, and all these medical college operators are part and parcel of the education mafia that is ruling the roost in Nepal. Moreover, the incidents in KU since last year, after KUPA movement, has clearly shown that in presence of Mafias faculties and staffs can no longer be safe.

Deregulation of education should be there only after formulation of active social codes. Our society needs to evolve a tenured positions for VCs and registrars so that they would never stay in chair till their deaths. And any element imposing Nepotism must be disqualified automatically. It must be made mandatory to check the social background of any faculty member. Faculties with dubious track records and personal weaknesses should never be allowed to function in any university set up. Only with such provisions, we can think of deregulating the academia, be it higher education or primary education. Otherwise, in the name of deregulation we will be simply breeding monsters. This is the lesson everyone should learn from KU and Suresh Raj.

Protesting the Mafia culture in Education

With entry of private sector, Nepal's education system has undergone a complete polarization. Our educationists and experts have constantly written how Nepalis from hinterland have been forced to forego quality education. On the other hand, people who are in Kathmandu and surrounding areas have good access to education but that also comes with back breaking tuition fee. Either way, Nepalis society has suffered a lot. On top of all these sagas of having or not having quality education centers, whatever produce we are getting is divisionary. No need to say, our education system prepares two types of citizen. All over the world, people are talking about digital divide, but in Nepal we are yet to overcome a sharp division in even primary education. But the Parents of both these classes are suffering. Parents in rural Nepal have to suffer because their dream of having their wards enrolled in good education is yet to concretize; and the parents in urban Nepal, too, are not happy because they have to struggle a lot to pay hefty sum for the education of their wards. At the cost of the nation, our society and individuals, a group is thriving and constantly milking Nepal's education sector. Everyone knows that things are not going well in our education sector. Our experts can even pinpoint who are these charlatans and thugs in the garb of educationist and academicians. But, the problem is that they are too scared to speak out and tell the truth. Indeed, the Education mafia is so powerful in Nepal that they can do anything. They can systematically mobilize people, they can grease the palms of politicians and they can shut the righteous voices violently.

Kathmandu University is a typical case in this respect. For last 16 years, Prof. Dr. Suresh Raj Sharma has remained in chair using his mafia tentacles. Time and again there have been protests against his highhandedness. And many a time, he ruthlessly sacked faculties, defamed staffs and tried to convince everyone that these faculties and staffs are selfish and disturbing his noble work. He is the one who is fulfilling his selfish ends, but bad name is given to all others. However, things have changed this time. The unity and perseverance which the faculties have displayed and the leadership which KUPA personalities provided are remarkable. Many of us have overcome threats, intimidation and even temptations. We are here at this stage not because of our unity alone; we are here because we know Suresh Raj Sharma like the back of our palm. Our common detestation and abhorrence of Suresh Raj Sharma is profound because we know that without his removal academia in KU will never be healthy. To make the academia healthy, to get rid of the nepotistic and corrupt charlatans, we are united. And this unity forms the basis of the exemplary role played by faculties, staffs and students of KU in ongoing fight against despotism and nepotism in KU.

Recently, we read how one board member of Nobel Medical College Nepalgunj(read here)took help of makers of New Nepal to thrash other board members. Reportedly Prachanda has apologized for the incident. So, we are not going into that aspect. Rather it would be worthwhile to discuss how pure and clean our board members and senators are. As often claimed by us, this incident clearly shows that whatever is happening in KU is being emulated elsewhere also. In KU, the senate members and trustees all are handpicked and dissenters are never repeated. Every member, whosoever opposes nepotism, corruption and despotism of Suresh Raj Sharmaj, she/he is being sidelined in a humiliating manner. Lately, Suresh Raj is getting things done through his manipulations and by ingratiating with the politicians, so he has not taken recourse to the things like what has happened to the board members Nobel Medical college. But, in recent past, we have witnessed that he has also hired criminals to attack and torture faculties and staffs who were demanding academic freedom in KU in a peaceful manner. He has not only mobilized local goons to thrash staffs of KU but has also mobilized his corrupt siblings to attack founding members of KU. What to talk about mobilization of academic goons like Bhola Thapa? The harassment triggered death of Buddhi Bahadur has put off even many past students of KU who are ready to vouch for geniality and honesty of late Buddhi Bahadur Biswakarma. Before, people never believed that for the sake of chair, Suresh Raj would stoop so low but now people are realizing that this fellow is vitiating an entire academia of Nepal.

With incidents in KU, people have already reckoned that the champion of "Private sector" Mr. Suresh Raj Sharma is nothing else than a mafia who wants to control KU for ever. After the death of Mr. Buddhi, it is a certainty that Suresh Raj would do anything for his total control. He would continue to impose nepotism, resort to corruption and throw away good teachers. But the worry is not his crimes only. The main worry is such a criminal is allowed to function without interruption and without questioning. Consequently, our society is now witnessing birth of many other Suresh Raj's. One Suresh Raj of Nobel Medical college, who goes by the name of Dr. Sunil Sharma, has already employed Suresh Raj's KU tactics with the board members of Nobel Medical college. Moreover, exactly the same way as Suresh Raj Sharma does, Dr. Sunil has also selected Dhulikhel area for emulating Suresh Raj. In Kamidanda never Dhulikhel, the bastion of Dr. Suresh Raj Sharma, helpless board members of Nobel Medical Colledge were humiliated, tortured and harassed in such an intimidating manner that some of them are fearing for their lives. It is unbelievable that merely for controlling a board, someone subjects erstwhile colleagues to such a inhuman treatment.

Reportedly, Nepal Medical Council is organizing a protest program against the Maoists for carrying out this heinous crime. They contend that the perpetrator Dr. Sunil Sharma is protected and shielded by the Maoist leadership. But the question is why this opposition is against the Maoists only? Why not to oppose all such people who are in academia? Handful of teachers from Nepalgunj gets beaten and the Nepal Medical Council gets enraged. But what do you think about constant beating, harassment, termination and defamation of KU faculties, staffs and founders by Sursh Raj? Should not Nepal Medical Council object to Suresh Raj also? Merely opposing or criticizing the perpetrators is not enough. It is high time that the root cause is pinpointed and attacked. Undoutedly, the root cause is Suresh Raj who is not only instigating people like Bhola Thapa but also inspiring people like Dr. Sunil Sharma. If likes of Suresh Raj are not overthrown, then there will be many more goonda (goons) elements in academia using violence to silence the critics.

'YCL abducts, brutalizes docs, others'
POST REPORT

KATHMANDU, Nov 20 - Cadres of the Maoist youth wing Young Communist League (YCL) allegedly abducted six persons including doctors and directors of Biratnagar-based Nobel Medical College Sunday and tortured them brutally for 14 hours at an unidentified location near Kamidanda in Kavre district.
According to one of the victims, Dr Gyanendra Giri, chairman of the college board of directors, they were blindfolded and beaten up from head to toe. 'The YCL cadres did everything except kill us,' Dr Giri said at a press meet organized by the victims in the capital Tuesday with a view to exposing the abduction, torture and intimidation. They were freed at 4:30 am on Monday.

"May be this is my last meeting with you. If the YCL abducts one of us (six) again within the coming 24 hours, it is certain they will kill us. You need not search for our bodies for confirmation before you headline our ill fate," said another victim, hospital director Aditya Khanal. According to him, the abductors had threatened to kill them within hours if they disclosed anything about their abduction.

The victims also claimed that the Maoists tortured them on the instruction of one 'Dr' Sunil Sharma, who reportedly has close links with top political leaders of almost all major political parties. Sharma had a dispute with board members regarding college shares after he was dismissed from membership of the board of directors as per a court verdict. However, the core issue in the dispute is yet to be sought out, as they could not elaborate matters during the press meet.

According to Dr Navin Sharma, chairman of the college advisory committee who is also director of the National Academy of Medical Education (NAME), six persons including chairman Dr Giri, directors Nava Raj Pandey, Umesh Pandey and Aditya Khanal, shareholder Janak Rijal and Santoshmani Neupane were abducted from Tilganga upon their arrival at Tribuvan International Airport.

According to Dr Sharma they arrived in the capital after Ananta asked them to do so to settle the issue. Ananta had said to Dr Giri that they had arranged time on Sunday with (Maoist) Chairman Prachanda and second-in-command Dr Baburam Bhattarai to discuss the issue, Dr Sharma said. "So, they arrived there. But, unfortunately the group that came all the way from Biratnagar was suddenly abducted from just outside the airport," he added.

The victims claimed that YCL Valley chief "Sagar" and Maoist central leader "Ananta" were directly involved in threatening and torturing the doctors and board members. However, Sagar denied any YCL involvement . "The dispute is entirely about a deal between the two groups. We have no connection at all," claimed Sagar, adding, "The accusation against us is completely baseless."

However, when the victims met Maoist Chairman Prachanda and Dr Babu Ram Bhattarai at the Maoist headquarters in the capital Tuesday, the Maoist chief apologized to them and confessed the YCL's involvement, according to Dr Giri.

"Now we know that Sunil Sharma misled our cadres including Sagar. So we will take action against them," Dr Giri quoted Prachanda as saying. According to Dr Giri, Bhattarai had requested not to disclose the affair to media and committed himself to supporting the victims.

According to Dr Sharma, Maoist leaders including Ananta had been supporting Sunil for the last two years. "The top Maoist leadership was frequently informed about the threats and intimidation but they did not take any action to stop that," Dr Sharma claimed. The victims also met Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala on Monday. He assured them that the culprits would be brought to book.

Dr Sharma accused Nepali Congress (NC) leader Dr Shekhar Koirala of supporting Sunil Sharma. "He pressured the management to adjust Sunil into the board," Dr Sharma claimed. However, Dr Koirala denied any involvement. He said he had nothing to do with the college. "Bringing Dr Giri and Sunil together at my home, I had suggested to them to work together without quarreling," Dr Koirala said, adding, "That is all that I did. But local NC leaders themselves have been conspiring against me."

Sitaram's morality

Sitaram Adhikary, who came to Kathmandu with an empty pocket, has charted a different route to richness. For some of us he is a legend because he has inspired many other crooks and thugs in Nepal's academia and bureaucracy to accumulate corrupt wealth. Despite his obvious corruption and 5-star life style, Sitaram has not stopped preaching about morality and social values. In his opinion, this blog is immoral and anti-social. Definitely, for corrupt, murderer and thugs, this is bound to be so. Everyone who has some skeletons in their cupboard will generally think like that. But the case of Sitaram is different. He knows very well that a lie repeated 100 times turns a truth. Like that propagandist of the Hitler, KU's Goebbels has been spreading canards and rumours for an umpteenth time. And he is ably supported by extremely communal mandales who feel that by ingratiating with job providers like Sitaram, they can also reach the height of greatness. With his influential position, Sitaram has spread canard not only against the junior faculties but also against the founding members.

Sitaram, neck deep in corruption, has never desisted from talking about morality. In one interview for promotion, Sitaram flatly asked one aspiring candidate "What is morality?" The question was intended to humiliate the faculty for his taking classes outside KU. And the faculty had to take the classes outside KU because of the pressure from nephew of Suresh Raj, Mr. Manish Pokhrel. As Head of the department Manish himself requested, the faculty could not say no and started delivering the lectures in a college in Kathmandu. By doing that the faculty did not violate any rule as the faculties are empowered to take classes with permission from the department chief. Sitaram knew it very well that the computer department was destroyed by Mr. Manish Pokhrel. He knew it very well that Manish Pokhrel was the one who earned lacks of rupees by such immoral actions where he had forced even junior colleagues to go stray. Sitaram never did anything against Manish fearing enragement of VC Suresh Raj. Rather, he attacked other faculties who were merely following the instructions of Manish. Friends have claimed that the faculty would not have been humiliated in such a way had that faculty licked the boot of Brijesh. As Sitaram did not find the faculty's name in the "Friend's list" of the Brijesh, he did not hesistate to humiliate the faculty in the interview itself. This conduct of Sitaram created some flutters then and some of us had remarked that the same question should be posed to Sitaram.

However, Sitaram has never realized what are the true feelings of the faculties. Ensconced in his greatness as registrar and founder of KU, Sitaram thinks that his dealings are beyond questioning. So, he reasons that nobody should raise moral questions against him. His recent breaching of moral conduct definitely lies in his re-appointment as KU's newly created post of advisor. As KUPA movement gathered momentum, the corrupt Sitaram started feeling the heat. To save his scalp, he made his sickness an excuse to tender the resignation from the registrarship. By giving away the registrarship, he not only tried to please disgruntled Bhadra Man but also diverted the attack from him. But, once the movement focussed on total management change, he again appeared in a new role with an active connivance of Suresh Raj. The unconsitutional appointment of Sitaram as KU advisor is nothing but a shameless violation of KU statute. Sitaram has talked a lot about morality, in addition to talking about KU rules and regulations, when faculties have demanded incentives, perks and promotion . But, in his own case, Sitaram has shamelessly jettisonned academic norms to decorate the advisory board of KU. Advisory board of KU never existed till his retirement from registrarship. But, once he retired, it is created overnight. What kind of morality Sitaram is maintaining has become further clear with his reassociation with KU.

From these instances, we can easily find out what is Sitaram' morality. For him morality is something that others in KU must maintain. He, Suresh Raj and likes of Bhadraman will never be immoral even if they kill staffs in day broadlight. If such a lousy character spews venom on the faculties who have openely revolted against the dictatorship of Suresh Raj and himself, we need to reckon that there are some more skeletons in Sitaram's cupboard. Sitaram has been planting stories not only against one individual. He has been spreading rumours about many faculties who are as young as his own children. Here also Sitaram is claiming that his sons are pure and very sacred and other faculties who are demanding academic freedom are characterless. Sitaram should have justified his actions and he should have cleared his name only in various controversies. Is it necessary for him to assasinate the character of young faculties? He did it because he thinks that what registrar of KU speaks will be taken as a Gospel truth by everyone else.

Now, we feel that Sitaram should no longer live in an ivory tower and vitiate the KU environment. Faculties who have worked honestly in KU should rather be appreciated for their work instead of defaming them in lieu of demanding organisational rights. These faculties should never be shown inferior than anybody else. Yeah, inferior than even sons of registrar Sitaram. Because the obvious reason is that sons of Sitaram are far worse than many faculties in KU. Both the sons of Sitaram have very bad past records. It has been already claimed in this blog that from one of the unmarried son's room "a filled balloon" is discovered. In other words, how come a "scum filled condom" is recovered from one of the Sitaram's sons room? Both the sons were unmarried at that time. They were not going steady with anyone. And Nepali society is not so forward that girlfriends are taken home to sleep together. And we can not say that Sitaram and his wife sleeps in sons' room with all the kits for sleeping together. So, an obvious question that strikes the mind; Is it a incest as a result of juvenile delinquency? We do not hint that Sitaram's family maintain an incestious relationship between brothers and sisters. We simply ask the Sitaram how come that "scum filled condom" is found in your son's room? And Sitaram, you must know that there are many in KU who knows this story. This is the question many of us have in mind. We are asking this question to Sitaram because we know that he knows all these things. Though he never accepts that his sons are such a rascal, yet we are forcing him to mull over this.

Sitaram, you have spoken a lot and mobilised people a lot. We simply ask you to stop all these manipulations. It would be better if you please surrender yoursefl to CIAA and accept all your crimes. Instead of following the rule of law, if you keep on attacking, inciting and vandalising dignity of the faculty members with your so called moral questions, we are also bound to raise questions about your family and your sons with dubious characters.

Now it is time to stop!

Rumouring and cover up exercise in KU

With entry of CIAA (Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority) into KU, Suresh Raj has lost his patience. The first attack Suresh Raj has made is on his own colleague and another ruthless character called Mr. Pushpa Raj Adhikary. Apart from this, Suresh Raj is now holding legal confabulations with brothers of Sitaram Adhikary. Grapevine has it that Suresh Raj is trying to give political colour to the incident. He is accusing that this blog as well as KUPA both are both controlled by ultra leftist elements. How much truth is there in his claims can be verified by our consistent stand. We are not members of any political party. We never blindly support any group as we do not have any vested interests. We have been fighting for Academic rights and freedom in KU. So, there is no chance that we will ever support any party or group which is hell bent in imposing despotism in Nepal.

Apart from his attempts to discredit this blog, he has been hitting at many people who were suspected to be involved in this blog. Mere suspicion is inciting Suresh Raj to attack former members of KU. Is it senility or overpowering sense of approaching defeat? This alone clearly indicates that Suresh Raj has lost his battle. If Suresh Raj and his henchmen think that this blog is not taken seriously, then we have some questions for them.

(1) Why you are sidelining Prof. Dr. Pushpa Raj Adhikary? and

(2) Why you are attacking and spreading rumours about former faculties?

Suresh Raj and Sitaram has recently sidelined Prof. Dr. Pushpa Raj Adhikary after revelation in this blog that Prof. Dr. Pushpa Raj Adhikary has claimed in written form that Prof. Dr. Sitaram Adhikary is involved in massive corruption in KU. If we are not reporting on truth and truth only, Suresh Raj and his gang should not have felt discomfort. They should have sit comfortably sharing drinks with Dr. Pushpa Raj. But, they have now conspired against Prof. Pushpa Raj. It clearly means that they want to victimize Prof. Pushpa Raj Adhikary as he is spilling the beans. Given guilty mindset of Suresh Raj, CIAA should not waste any time now. They should immidiately arrest Suresh Raj and question him about his recent exercises in KU.

Suresh Raj and Sitaram have been constantly exposed in this blog. We have managed to receive very confidential documents like salary details of Prof. Bhadraman and Prof. Pushpa Raj also. We are now trying to get some documents which clearly indicate complicity of Sitaram in improper dealings. Similarly, we are requesting KU contractors also to give us their side of stories. How Bhola Thapa tried to extract some mileage from his relation in the Kantipur has also been published here itself. All these things clearly indicate that there is not one or two individual in this mission of purifying KU. Entire wellwishers of KU are united with this blog. Had we not raised very important issue, we would never have received such a great cooperation from wellwishers of KU. Is not it a proof of this blog having social respectability? So, rumours of Suresh Raj, Sitaram, Bhadraman and Mukunde against some faculties should be taken as frustrations of a corrupt gang hell bent to hit back on whistleblowers.

Besides, these campaigns, Suresh Raj has instructed Mukunda not to hand over confidential documents to subordinate staffs. Administrative staffs working with Mukunda are being searched and screened for photocopying some records also. Especially with the help of Navendra and black teeth Kumar Baral, Mukunda is trying to tear away pages and burn old records. All these attempts are to mislead CIAA investigation and to save the corrupt gang of KU.

Similarly, Bhadraman is requesting his contractors in NEWARI not to divulge commission details. He is threatening contractors that if they talk with others, they would never deal with KU in future. People want to talk about how much they have paid to Bhadraman, but they are not ready to come out openly. So, we have requested some of the wellwishers to blacken some portions in the receipt like name, details, and items. Then, they can send these documents to us. We will definitely publish these records for facilitating CIAA investigation.

We are very happy that our small efforts are bearing fruit now. With our little contribution, KU is likely to be cleaned up very soon. So, we request all the friends to keep on supporting us.

Departure and responsibility

It seems that now there is only one option left to save KU. That is to relieve present management from their responsibility by bringing in a total management change. More than a year before, Prof. Dr. Suresh Raj Sharma remarked in one of his sponsored interviews that a handful of faculties from Science are disgruntled and were trying to create problems in KU. Since then enough water has already flown in Bagmati. Apart from the martyrdom of Buddhi Bahadur Biswakarma, the first martyr of KU movement for academic freedom, Suresh Raj's own daughter has also passed away. More Suresh Raj has tried to cover up, the clearer the rot inside the system is becoming now. Recently, things have become a real uncomfortable for Suresh Raj, Sitaram and Bhadraman Tuladhar. After revealation in this blog, it has been learnt that Suresh Raj has now shunted Prof. Dr. Pushpa Raj Adhikary. It has been conveyed to us that Prof. Dr. Sitaram Adhiary, whom Prof. Dr. Pushpa Raj Adhikary has claimed to be involved in massive corruption in KU, has wept before Suresh Raj to plead for action against Prof. Dr. Pushpa Raj Adhikary. Consequently, in a secret meeting attended by Suresh Raj and his wife, Sitaram and his wife, Bhadraman and Daniel Tulahdhar's step mom, goonda Mukunde stammerred in high pitch voice for the scalp of Pushpa Raj. They have unanimously decided to kick out Prof. Dr. Pushpa Raj from their coterie and not to continue him as controller after expiry of his present term. Similarly, in this close family meeting, it has been learnt that Bhadraman has complained against Mukunde also.

These development, if verified true, represents a difficult situation for Suresh Raj.

The foremost question that strikes my mind is why action against Pushpa Raj?

Is it a crime in KU to speak against the corrupt portly Sitaram Adhikary?

Does not it clearly show that Suresh Raj is also hand in glove with Sitaram?

More than that, the present action against Prof. Dr. Pushpa Raj further demonstrates ruthlessness of Suresh Raj. Suresh Raj is so cruel that he never accepts his mistakes and his corruptions. Rather, he shunts out, defames, mobilises goons, and harasses people who speak against his highhandedness. He has not only attacked one time colleague and founder of KU using his notorious corrupt brother presently entangled in CIAA, but also attacked present real time colleague Prof. Dr. Pushpa Raj. Now, do we need any other proof of his being power hungry mafia?

With entry of CIAA in KU, the defences of Suresh Raj are likely to crumble very shortly. However, the most dangerous part is his damage causing potential. It appears that Suresh Raj is now banking on a syndrome called "हम तो डुबेँगे सनम, आपको भी ले डुबेँगे।(OK, I will get drowned, but I will ensure your fall down also)." Some sources has revealed that Suresh Raj has now devised two pronged strategy; firstly to seek continuation as VC for the fourth term also and if this does not work, try to control KU in a new incarnation. Given active movement going against him, Suresh Raj is not likely to be repeated again. There is a great lobbying going on for grabbing VCship. From college principles to so called educationists, they are all doing the rounds of Girija quarter, Madhav quarter, and Prachanda's headquarter. Mainly the jobless educationists and so called intellectuals are lobbying for KU job. And friends have chastised this blog also for tempting these people by constantly reporting on a mammoth scale of corruption in KU.

Departure of Suresh should never be marked with arrival of an unknown devill. Moreover, mere departure of Suresh Raj is not enough. It would be very nice he lands directly in either Dhulikhel jail or Nakkhu jail. If this does not happen and Suresh Raj is let free without any action, the days are not far away when he would cause disturbance in KU by delivering his speeches in 28 Kilo or by mobilising his dreaded local goons. So, the first step as regards his departure from KU must be towards ensuring his destination. After his departure, KUPA and KUSA needs to carry out "Awareness campaign" to make gullible faculties aware of an indispensibility of academic freedom in KU. KUPA and KUSA needs to instill a sense of independence in all the faculties and staffs so that from tomorrow no VC or registrar would play politics and divide faculties and staffs. Similarly, KUPA friends need to inform so called engineers of SOE to understand what engineering is and how ChangeinKU and KUPA has been engineering a revolution in KU. These are befitting responsibilities incase Suresh Raj exits quickly.

Educate educators

Dr Ghanshyam Bhatt

It is hard to quantify the correlation among education, overall national development and politics but one depends on the others. Political instability hinders national development and improper education promotes dirty politics. A stable political system would accelerate economy, improve education and prepare people for less dirty politics. Unless basic human rights, rights of expression, independence of judiciary and independent law enforcement bodies are in place, a country can't accelerate economically or politically.

Although temporary political stability can be created through the use of force but force can't be used to educate people, raise the national growth, or to improve health care. Yet many people, due to the lack of education and hence opportunity, come under the impression that barrels of guns are the ultimate solutions.

Pakistan's army over the past eight years has failed to stabilize the nation turning it into the most dangerous country in the world (Newsweek, 2007, Oct). A large number of extremists exist in provinces where mostly Madrasas educate people. These extremists once trained for some specific purpose are a trouble now because they were not educated thereafter.

A nuclear power's army fighting with lawyers and the military Junta in Myanmar fighting against monks indicate that the ideas, thoughts and wisdom are stronger and have much more deeper impact than the use of force. The equally bad situation if not worse is in our own backyards; killing of Birendra Sah. The people that were directly or indirectly involved in using force in the past conflict continue with the war mentality.

The conflict has stimulated the ethnic tensions and multicultural mindset has been plagued. Not only has a generation of people developed over the past decade that believes in the use of force as an ultimate solution but also a coming generation is equally victimized. Between 2003 and 2006 only, we had 22000 students and 10000 teachers abducted (UNESCO report). The whereabouts of some of these documented numbers is still a matter of investigation. Most of these abductors were trained to use force to fight. The students' favourite pastime game in rural areas has become mimicking armed battles, cowling and shooting as they are inspired by the war.

The victimized students are in urgent need of rehabilitation or something like peace education that relieves enmity, educates people to love and prepares compassionate citizens. Let children know that arms, wars and physical violence can't solve any of our problems. As educating people is a critical challenge for us, the educators must be trained for this prime responsibility.

Extortion is still in effect. Export is declining because of poor quality products. The state-owned industries have become an employment centre for political cadres. People try to avoid the law enforcement agencies as far as possible because of their credibility. The law enforcement bodies are not trained for the basic human rights. The bottom line is that insufficient knowledge to handle the problems causes most of the problems. Failure to keep the morale of the educators high might be one of the reasons for this mess.

At a university professors' interaction program in Kathmandu last year, a sitting member of parliament insisted that their poor performance to decision making is because they were not knowledgeable since they were poorly educated and trained by the professors. As republican set-up and federal structure are under way, how prepared is our academia about educating people regarding the political changes? A decision taken in haste might invite political disaster. Well informed academia can be very useful in planning, guiding, smoothening the transition and successful implementation. It's noteworthy that failure to plan is a plan to fail.

During the time of their professional development a large number of our graduates take part time jobs for several years. This prevents the emergence of commitment and ability without which the higher education can't produce motivated graduates. We haven't done anything to motivate educators and make their profession attractive. Not improving their quality and knowledge deteriorates the quality of education. Educating them with the global changes, innovations, exposure to outside world and participation in the international conferences would motivate them and attract new graduates for the doctorate degree. Some countries have implemented qualification allowances for the people having higher degrees to motivate for academic jobs, research and attract intellectual Diaspora.

A knowledgeable academia must be in place for the making of education policies. The political influence in the academic bureaucracy doesn't promote innovations and growth. Working as a faculty member at an institution I, several times, heard my boss saying that professionally educated smart people are trouble makers. Yet, academic jobs provide high social status and secure position even though they work for meager pay. So an opportunity for academic growth would be a good incentive to keep their morale high.

NAST and UGC can play a role to develop a consensus among the academia about the role of educators in reforms, peace and national development. Appropriate policies and environment can attract intellectual Diaspora directly or indirectly. Different channels, bureaucratic or otherwise, can be created to attract them. The academic institutions of higher education can attract intellectual Diaspora easily by promoting academic freedom and research if they have academically motivated leadership.

What is uncommon in Daman?

If you go through CV of Daman Dhungana in here, you will be impressed. Dhungana, being the first speaker of the parliament after People’s movement 1990 has been active in politics since his student life. He is one of the founding members of Nepal Students Union. Daman Dhungana represents purity in thought and action. My respect for Mr. Dhungana increased many times when he thrashed NC workers demanding money in exchange of their support to his candidature. Amongst legal luminaries of Nepal, Mr. Dhungana is a gem who provided his legal services to the victims of ruthless Panchayati system free of cost.

A man with such an illustrious character has been trapped by Suresh Raj. I lamented the moment when I heard that he has accepted to be one of the members of Suresh Raj’s coterie to prop him up as the de facto boss of KU for ever. I could never believe that the founder of NSU would tie his neck with killer of SWC and Buddhi Bahadur Bishwakarma. Of course, it is not the first time I am taken aback by Mr. Dhungana’s mistake. I remember in one gathering Mr. Daman Dhungana praising Suresh Raj at the cost of all the politicians of Nepal. If I am correct, he had remarked, “One of the representatives of the filthiest social group is joining you honest people.” Then, he proceeded to shake his hand with Suresh Raj’s. One amongst us had at the time quipped "ढुँगानाजीले आफैलाई ढुँगा हान्यो" (Mr. Dhungana has stoned himself).

It is not only Mr. Daman Dhungana, but many others are in Nepal who feel that Suresh Raj is good personally and doing well professionally also. Many of them, impressed with easy to crumble structure with 6 Richter earthquake, still do not know that on the foundation of these building lies the greed of Suresh Raj for cash and power. Suresh Raj and Sitaram have used KU buildings both for filling up their personal coffers and to trumpet their good management. Like those residents of Babai bridge who used to hail Mr. Khum Bahadur as a real Bikasbaadi till the collapse of the bridge, I am sure that many of these political personalities and legal luminaries would continue to praise Suresh Raj till the collapse of Suresh Raj’s defenses.

As a matter of fact, the incidents in KU so far must have jolted many in Nepal. Daman Nath must have read about those letters to the editor and those write ups. Not only KU faculties, but also intellectuals from TU have mocked at “saintliness” of Suresh Raj. At least from the president of TU Students’ Association, we expect this much. OK, let us forget those publications. What about other publications in Vernacular weeklies and dailies? Can Daman Dhungana miss those expressions? I am asking that question because Daman Nath had also opposed king Gyanedra. If Daman Nath can oppose king Gyanendra, why he is supporting Gyanendra’s stooge and another academic despot?

Is it distant relation with Suresh Raj? I am wondering and I am scratching my head to know what made Mr. Daman Dhungana accept the proposal of Suresh Raj. Suresh Raj, with very dirty personal track record, has constantly sided with the palace. He has talked about educational development not to bring in real academic development but to bring personal development. Suresh Raj has sacked teachers, who like lawyers, want freedom. Suresh Raj has mobilized goons against faculties exactly the same way Gyanendra unleashed his terror reign in Nepal. There is nothing Suresh Raj has not done to show that he is a pure despot, and a hardcore mandale. And to top it all, he has even used his tentacles to force one innocent dalit staff to commit suicide. Still, a member of Chaubise group is supporting Suresh Raj.

This clearly shows that there is something uncommon in our esteemed Daman. We are wondering whether our Daman is also no different from other politicians who look for nexus and connections to swell support base? Has our Daman jettisoned sense of legality? Has he forgotten his legal lessons that threatening a junior staff with dire consequences for demanding his/he organizational rights amount to “Power Harassment?”

We still believe that Mr. Daman Dhungana will realize his follies and reconsider his decision. We request Mr. Dhungana to ask Suresh Raj to accept rights of the faculties and staffs. We request Mr. Dhungana to tell Suresh Raj that he could not be part of his Trustee team if faculties and staffs are protesting in KU. Only if Mr. Dhungana does these things, we believe that there is nothing uncommon in Mr. Daman. Otherwise, We will have to keep on informing that Daman is another portly mouse in Suresh Raj's trap.

KU's Sitaram syndrome

Enough has already been spoken about how Sitaram of KU became rich. A mere government official went onto become a nuveau rich who could go to Singapore to buy goodies for sweety darling on her marriage. Gauri Shankar Adhikary's useless house sans water and sans cleanliness despite having Navaraj there could not be the milkiing cow for Sitaram. Rs. 50,000 per month by Nepalis standard is nothing in US. So, Sitaram funded sonny Sharad's US education solely on the strength of ill-gotten wealth, accrued from construction boom in KU. Sitaram's story is not puzzling because,in Nepal, many have followed the same trajectory to become wealthy in short span of their lives. If the chum from I.Sc. days, Ramesh Dhungel swears in Baneswore that Sitaram urinated on his bed when he came to Kathmandu with an empty pocket, how can we doubt about his initial poverty?

Presently, I am not sure Ramesh Dhungel will repeat the same statement. At that time Ramesh Dhungel was given cold shoulder by both Sitaram and Suresh Raj. But now, Ramesh Dhungel is already nominated as one of the trustees along with Daman Nath Dhungana. So, it is natural that Ramesh Dhungel would outrightly deny that he ever spoke such a thing against Sitaram. It is quite possible that he may consider such thoughts and ideas profane and blasphemous against a good name of portly Sitaram.

People complain only when they are sidelined and on the verge of being relegated to the dustbin of the history. Pushparaj used to get angry every day and every night till he was made the dean. Put a drink, be it beer or whishky or wine, before Pushpa Raj, and he would invigorate him with the drink to claim that "Sitaram is a chor(thief)." Many KU gatherings reverberated with this punchline from Prof. Dr. Pushpa Raj. But, these are stories of past without any evidence and any witness. It is another thing that certain track records may be found in certain mail boxes. However, even if CIAA questions Prof. Dr. Pushpa Raj about veracity of his punchline, we are not going to get it. Pushpa Raj has his mouth sealed with plum positions in KU.

In a nutshell, transformation of Ramesh Dhungel and Pushpa Raj has something to do with with a syndrome KU is plagued with. It would be apt to call it KU's Sitaram syndrome because he is the one who runs the dirty tricks of Suresh Raj and provides necessary intelligence to perpetuate nepotism in KU. Cunning Sitaram is a past master of manipulation. He knows very well as the registrar of KU, he has to manage people and keep them in size. And he has unique way of managing contradictions. If one staff or faculty is making vociferous demand for promotion, he will immdiately sound out likely competitor of the staff to make the same demand. Once all make the same demand, he talks about regulations, rules and constraints of self-sustaining University like KU. But, if faculties demand in unison why KU is not giving adequate salary, then he will meekly claim that they are developing KU infrastructure. Faculties and staffs have undergone salary cut. They have foregone promotions and other incentives because Sitaram says that KU infrastructure should be developed.

Eversince Sitaram built a bangalow in Thapagaun, he has been claiming development of one or antoher thing. Not only in KU and erstwhile Royal Drug Limited, even in Chemical Soceity of Nepal, he has sounded out people in this way. His colleagues in Chemical Society flatly claim that Sitaram's moves can not be thwarted. Perhaps because of such dexterous moves, Brijesh still believes what he was told in his early childhood that his father made that bungalow in Thapagaun with white money. And sometimes, to utter surprise of all of us, Brijesh even claims that their house used to be the most beautiful house in Naya Baneswore. Is it lamentation of not being able to make brand new grand house with ill-gotten wealth or continuation of his childhood fallacy imposed on his migrain laden head? Hard to fathom becuase Sitaram Syndrome is so pervasive that not only others but family members are also brainwashed.

So, he is still stuck there and takes pride in claiming past glory of having the most beautiful bangalow in Thapagaun. But all others who know the trajectory of Sitaram's upward mobility, including Ramesh Dhungel, are generally not able to hide their chuckles on innocence of Brijesh. And sometimes, they may poke fun on him saying "Bichara sojo chha. Dherai tension dinu hundaina, migraine le sataula." Sitaram knows mind game very well and his own son is the proof of this. So, for a master manipulator like him, leaving registrarship to become extraconstitutional superboss who can advise VC is definitely not relinquishing his position of power. Bhadraman might be realizing it now that under Suresh Raj and Sitaram, he may get registrar or VCship but he will remain their eternal servant.

In the wake of KUPA movement, ultimately Sitaram found a real taste for his maipulative skills in KU. When faculties and staffs started swelling the KUPA and KUSA rank and file, initially Sitaram was really nervous. Becuase, at that time, he could not understand why his manipulations failed. He was so jaded and scared that he used to complain with everyone that faculties and staffs gheraoed him as if gheraoing him is aking to murdering someone. He profusely complained as if the faculties and staffs are in habit of gheraoing everyone. Never he mentioned that it was wrong on his part to terminate faculties in bulk. So, he has never realized that if it were to be some other university, his crime would have already ensured face swelling punches on his upper part.

The decency and peacefulness with which KUPA and KUSA members carried out their agitation is remarkable. It is remarkable in that it provided enough leeway for the thug gang of KU. It allowed Suresh Raj to buy time and it allowed Sitaram to devise new strategy. It allowed Pushpa Raj to think afresh and it allowed all the bootlickers to grab plum position. The Sitaram syndrome of KU is apparently thriving in peace and tranquility of the silent protests of KUSA and KUPA members. Then, what shall we do? Shall we ransack KU, burn Suresh Raj's chair and stone the vehicles of VC, and registrar? No! Never. We should never do all these things. We should continue to raise our voices. We should continue to inform every one that we will continue our peaceful agitation as long as power centres of Nepal overlook the mess in KU. We should continue to petition every free thinking individual that they need to speak their mind now because Suresh Raj is no longer educationist and developer. He is a power hungry mafia who likes appreciation only.

Sitaram syndrome may demand another faculty's life and it may allow another faculty to be beaten like a dog by the local goons. But, we have to renounce violence if we want to denouce nepotism and corruption in academia for ever. We have only one weapon in our hand that is to raise awareness with our words. For that we need to inform Daman Dhungana also, and we need to inform officials of CIAA also. We need to ask Daman Dhungana who is dirtier? Politicians of Nepal or academicians liks Suresh Raj? We need to ask CIAA whether they have checked antecedents of Sitaram Adhikary or not? If everyone looks into this syndrome of Sitaram, I am sure that it will be wiped out from KU for ever and never to come back and rear its ugly head.

Abusing authority : forcing suicide

December 27,2006 is a black day in KU's history. This day, a staff, who gave his all to KU ended his life. And he had to end his life because the powerful officials of KU administration rebuked him, scolded him, threatened him and chastised him for being a member of an oppressed community. What registrar of KU and the dean Bhola Thapa had said to Late Buddhi Bahadur has also vanished with him. Because KU registrar and the dean will never accept their crime and repent. So, only credible source of information regarding his untimely death is the statement of his widowed wife. And this credibility is also being tarnished and being destroyed by a smear campaign against the deceased and his spouse.

Recently, while watching "300," I was awestruck by the similarity the plot has with the developments in KU. Spartan King Leonidas give all to his kingdom and his people while seeking martyrdom against the expansionist Persian King Xerxes. But, back home his wife queen Gorgo had to rally support by sleeping with a cunning politician who not only betrays her but also the nation. In "300," we saw that the abusive politician is finally exposed and put to death. And we also saw that the nation rallies behind the martyrdom against Xereses. In KU, we are yet to see abusive gang of Bhola Thapa, Registrar Bhadraman, VC Suresh Raj and Advisor Sitaram going to jail. Now, as regards rallying and unity amongst the faculties, I am proud of the members who have joined KUPA, KUSA and SWC, but I simply detest those who are licking the boots of Suresh Raj and Sitaram.

Why KU fraternity and the faculties have not been able to concretize immediate arrest of Bhola Thapa and registrar Bhadraman or Sitaram (Whoever might have issued threats of defamation and humiliating remarks to Late Buddhi) has something to do partly with machinations of KU administrators and partly with our own shortcomings. Before the untimely death of Buddhi Bahadur from KU, there was another suicide of same nature in Kavre district itself. One student, Late Sagar Basnet, from Kavre Secondary High School, Panauti committed suicide by consuming poison. Like Buddhi Bahadur he was also humiliated by the powerful personality of the school and he could not take it any longer and ended his life. Subsequently, entire Panauti got enraged and forced the school management to accept their mistakes. The school management not only promised of erecting the bust of the deceased student, but also agreed to provide scholarships in his name. Khuman Singh Tamang reported this in the Kantipur(Please find it here) . But, the same Khuman Singh could not find his words in both the vernacular Kantipur Daily and the English The Kathmandu Post. Budhhi Bahadur was a staff and was humiliated in far uglier terms, yet Suresh Raj, Sitaram and Bhadraman managed to prevent the news from reaching the newstand. They exercised all their powers so that they can save Bhola Thapa to save themselves.

How cunning KU administration was, during those days, can be gauged by the fact that, in the wake of Buddhijee's death, they disappeared Bhola Thapa for a couple of days from KU. Once the news of Buddhi's death spread, crest fallen Bhola Thapa could not gather his wits to go to Dhulikhel campus. However, Suresh Raj advised him to take his time and advised him to avoid coming to Dhulikhel. At the same time, Suresh Raj constantly kept on requesting his contacts in Nepalis media and publications not to publish that news report. By successfully preventing the appearance of the news report in media, Suresh Raj somehow managed to taper off enragement of the faculties and the staffs. Consequently, when Bhola Thapa reappeared in KU, he did not have to face wrath of the KU fraternity like the principal of Kavre Secondary School, Panuati because by then emotions have subsided.

Arson and vandalism never constitute justice. Whatever may be their crimes, Bhola, Bhadraman, and Suresh Raj should never be meted out inhuman treatments. At the same time, they should not be let free without facing trial to restore justice. So far the affairs have been real sad. No body so far ventured to ask Bhola Thapa about his crimes. Life is already lost but the perpetrator has remained unquestioned. No body asked him why he is doing all these things? And no body has ever asked him at whose instruction, faculties and staffs are being humiliated? Despite his brazen crime, likes of Bhola Thapa are now going in overdrive to bulldoze the KUPA movement. This simply shows that Suresh Raj is as ruthless as king Xerexes of "300." And this ruthlessness need to be matched by stoickness by KUPA and every free thinking faculty member of KU. Howevermuch Suresh Raj carries out his machinations, and however many deaths he presides over, we should never compromise on our principles.

On the other hand, with entry of CIAA in KU, we need to realize that there is a new ray of hope. And there is a possibility that crime against Buddhijee will also be brought to justice. Therefore, without resorting to any vandalism, which mandale Suresh Raj and his clan generally resorts to, and without being intimidated, we need to petition CIAA that they should look into suicide case also. KUPA and friends must ensure that CIAA would summon Bhola Thapa and hold him accountable for abusing his position and harassing a staff to commit suicide.

Student suicide triggers rage, school vandalized
KHUMAN SINGH TAMANG

KAVRE, Dec 15 - A ninth grader at Kavre Secondary School in Panauti committed suicide Tuesday following extreme torture at the hands of the principal and a teacher. Sagar Basnet consumed poison after the teacher and the principal forced him to stand up in the exam hall for
10 minutes and beat him with a bamboo.

The school management has suspended principal Sitaram Tiwari and teacher Dambar Dahal and started an investigation.

Basnet died at Scheer Memorial Hospital while undergoing treatment after consuming the poison. The boy's family and eyewitnesses say he was subjected to mental torture for arriving at the examination hall without an admission card. He did not posses the card as his fees had not been paid for the last two months.

"He felt quite humiliated after he was made to stand for 10 minutes at the examination hall and beaten and scolded by the teachers," said his close friend Sunil Sapkota, adding, "Later he refused to have tea upon our request." The principal beat him on the legs with bamboo sticks, according to eyewitnesses. His legs were covered with bruises, said his father Kumar. The school management suspended the teacher and the principal after the parents, students and locals resorted to vandalizing the school in protest against the torture.

Later, the school management and the victim's party reached an agreement to set up a revolving fund and provide yearly scholarships to three students in Basnet's memory. The management also promised to raise his statue in the school premises. Surrounding the school, the irate parents, students and locals vandalized the school and beat up Tiwari and Dahal. The principal sustained knee-injury and the teacher, head injury.

Aspects of corruption in KU and role of CIAA

Entry of Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) into KU was along expected lines. It is rather late that CIAA has taken upon itself an arduous task of investigating in KU because many have felt that CIAA should have been there in KU a long time back. Investigation in KU is not an easy task in that it represents a systematic corruption of Suresh Raj Sharma, Sitaram Adhikary and Bhadraman Tuladhar from the inception of KU itself. From toileteries to building construction, from nepotism to greasing the palm of Nepali politicians, Suresh Raj has managed to dent the system and accrue undue benefits for himself and powers that matters. Apart from these financial irregularities, another detestable corruption Suresh Raj is presiding over in KU is academic corruption. Many have said and spoken how Sitaram, Suresh Raj and Bhadraman have bent the rules and admitted their wards in KU system. Therefore, it is worthwhile to discuss different aspects of corruption in KU.

Academic corruption
Academia deserves valuation of virtue and talent. Academia can never succeed on celebration of mediocrity. However, in the name of self-sustainment, Suresh Raj has successfully turned KU into an institute where powerful ones of Nepal can easily admit and graduate their wards. When Suresh Raj and Sitaram saw the political class and bureaucrats lining upto them for admission, they, too, started admitting their wards. Sons of registrar, both Brijesh Adhikary and Sarad Adhikary, would have never made to KU both as a student and teachers except for bending the rules by Sitaram.

Regarding Bhadraman Tuladhar, less said is better. His son Daniel Tuladhar was unfit for entry into KU as he had less than 50% in I.Sc.. Then, Bhadraman used some connection and got his son admitted in one shoddy engineering college in Ukraine. After graduation in Road and Highway Engineering, Bhadraman imposed him in Mechanical Engineering department using all his force as a dean of Engineering. As a leading light of KU, Suresh Raj has, in this case also, the credit of the most blatant violation of academic honesty. He relaxed KU-created requirement just to admit his youngest daughter who has recently passed away.

Nepotism is not the only one academic corruption on the part of Suresh Raj, Sitaram and Bhadraman. They have played around with semester results, answer sheets submitted by teachers and even entrance results for KUMET. There are many non-deserving candidates in Medical and Engineering whose admission has been possible because their parents were in good book of Suresh Raj, Sitaram and Bhadraman. It has been contested very hotly in KU premises that Sitaram has even given an admission to a younger brother of an Asst. Professor of Electrical and Electronics department in violation of the requirement for entry into that branch of Engineering. The reason ascribed for this action of Sitaram relates with making his son Brijesh Adhikary comfortable in the department.

Thus, CIAA needs to investigate academic irregularity by checking the credentials of the wards of Suresh Raj, Sitaram and Bhadraman Tuladhar. Similarly, CIAA must seize all the archives in the exam section and find out anomalies in KUMET entrance examination. CIAA must investigate whether Sharad Adhikary and Daniel Tuladhar are given position in KU by breaching existing rules or not.

Financial irregularity
One of the commenters here in this blog has claimed that she/he has a proof of Prof. Dr. Pushpa Raj Adhikary claiming Prof. Dr. Sitaram Adhikary to be involved in a huge scale corruption in KU. Prof. Dr. Pushpa Raj Adhikary is one of the confidants of both Suresh Raj and Sitaram Adhikary. Still he is controller of examination and priorly he functioned as Dean of the School of Science. When someone, who is working so closely with both Suresh Raj and Sitaram, makes such a claim in black and white, CIAA should immidiately gather the proof and investigate it from that angle. We have managed to receive the e-mail correspondence of Prof. Dr. Pushpa Raj Adhikary and one former staff of KU, wherein Prof. Dr. Pushpa Raj has categorically said that Sitaram Adhikary is in massive corruption in KU. We do not believe that someone who is so close to Suresh Raj and Sitaram would speak such a thing without any evidence. We can forward that e-mail to CIAA provided the identity of the provider is kept secret to prevent possible physical and mental attack by Suresh Raj Sharma, Sitaram Adhikary and Pushpa Raj Adhikary. At the same time, we request CIAA to summon Prof. Dr. Pushpa Raj Adhikary and find out from him whether such e-mail exists or not.

Nepotism and favouritism
The strongest case of Nepotism of Suresh Raj lies in exponential rate of promotion of Mukunda Prasad Upadhyay. Qualificationwise, Mukunda Upadhyay with 2nd division M.A. is not an worthy person to decorate the top most managerial position which should have gone to the academics. There have been many academics with better qualifications than Mr. Mukunda. As regards managerial skill, Mr. Mukunda can not speak properly and he takes long time to complete his sentences. His stammering has always put KU in embarassment in front of foreign visitors. Foreginers were always in awkward position while talking with him. And some of the visitors expressed their surprise how could such a person with a speech disability has been able to decorate the top managerial position where he has to negotiate, talk, motivate and encourage subordinates, colleagues and dignitaries with his spoken words. When they were told that he is the youngest brother of Suresh Raj, many of them blushed. Suresh Raj never blushes from his nepotism but the visitors blush. This is the sorry reality of KU because of Nepotism of Suresh Raj Sharma.

If nepotism in the form of Mukunda is to run day to day affairs while milking the holy cow KU, another serious nepotism practiced by Suresh Raj lies in control of KU. Recently, Suresh Raj has passed from the senate where he himself is declared the chief patron of KU. With KUPA agitation, Suresh Raj has foreseen that his days are numbered and becuase of his siding with king Gyanendra he may not be continued after expiry of this term. Sensing that KU is going out of his grip, he has managed to cajole the senate and appoint himself as the chief trustee/patron of KU. How and why KU senate made such a decision is really baffling. No senate should ever appoint someone whom it recommends as the someone who can constitute it. Suresh Raj is appointed VC at the recommendation of the senate. And now the senate is making its own recomendee its own recommender. This has been done in KU with some machinations. And to give some kind of balance to the senate, Suresh Raj has managed to romp in Daman Dhungana and Ramesh Dhungel both.

Irrespective of the presence of high profile names, CIAA needs to investigate how the KU senate has bestowed such a position to an acting VC who was appointed on its own recommendation. In course of its investigation, we believe that, CIAA will look at the corruption in KU from all possible angles. In addition to academic and financial corruption, Nepotism and favouritism have remained prominent tools of Suresh Raj, Sitaram and Bhadra Man in KU. For cleaning KU, CIAA needs to dwelve into all these aspects of corruption.

Dismal education system

By Dr Ghanshyam Bhatt

Literacy, according to UNESCO, is the ability to identify, understand, interpret, create, communicate and compute using printed and written materials associated with varying contexts. The literacy rate of Nepal is 49 percent of which roughly 63 percent are males and 35 percent are females. It has been observed throughout the world that raising the literacy rate results in better socio-economic life. The primary and secondary school attendance ratios in Nepal are close to 87 percent and 42 percent respectively (Nepal Demographic and health Survey, 2006). Although these rates are increasing, we are still away from one of the UN's Millennium Development Goals - achieve universal primary education by 2015.

At a greater risk are people who don't make it to the primary schools or who dropout before reaching grade five. The existing primary education in rural areas is still very primitive and less qualitative. Lack of accessibility, overload of students and lack of teachers and facilities are a few things to be blamed. Chewing tobacco in classrooms, smoking, asking students for favors, playing cards in free times and knitting sweaters while teaching are what teachers commonly indulge in those schools. This affects the motivation of the students; a main reason for dropout besides economic conditions. Yet they work under very adverse conditions like low remuneration, low social respect, donation drive, huge teaching load and responsibility. The worrisome issue is that the students left behind at this stage can rarely contribute to the economy.

The secondary school attendance ratio lags far behind the primary one, and the number of women and unprivileged group fall way low. We always had less than 50 percent pass out rate in the SLC except last year and the majority belong to Kathmandu and other urban areas. The rural parents face tremendous difficulties to send their children to secondary schools. Statistics show that a vast majority of the rural students fail to get through the SLC exams. This tradition is in effect for a long time, so the flaws need to be overviewed.

Most of the students in the rural areas fail in English, Science and Mathematics because they don't get proper education as compared to their counterparts in the urban areas. An urban high school student can watch and enjoy a Hollywood movie but for his rural counterpart even understanding a simple English lesson is a nightmare. Some schools don't have enough teachers throughout the year in rural areas. They fail not because they are incompetent and lazy, but because our policy treats them unfairly. We have had just one student passing in the whole district, what on earth are we doing?

The differently taught students are made to sit together for the same exams. Some educationists opine that it is the standard everyone has to meet for homogeneity. How fair is it to test students on something they are never taught? Who is to blame for this unfair treatment? In the absence of any monitoring system there is negligence from the teachers but the truth is that their hands are tied, too. At this level, a majority of our youth are left in the middle not because they are incapable but because they are the rural poor. The scenario gets worse if this group comes under the influence of antisocial elements. The burning down of our national flag, vandalism, extortion etc are the consequences of this negligence. The people living in the cantonment sites would probably be capable of doing something constructive and contribute to the economy if they had proper education. There could be some vocational and technical trainings or some employment-generating education. The time is ripe for us to think about the injustice done to the majority of the rural poor.

Privatization has made college education further inaccessible to the rural population. The government's lack of monitoring has turned it into a business, sometimes a family business. The examination in the colleges is so unscientific that your exam paper can get lost, mixed up with others, the digits might get interchanged and all of the students in a class can get the same points. Passing an intermediate or bachelor level not only requires one to be smart and intelligent, but also you have to be equally lucky. The inability to maintain academic calendar puts extra burden financially. The professors here are more responsible for the mess as they have more freedom as compared to the high school teachers.

The lack of job opportunities and uncertainty of future create frustration and low self-esteem as a small portion of the students reach Masters level. By this time, they have extremely good experience of how weak, unplanned and chaotic our education system is. So, failing an exam could result in a vandalism to protest against the institution. This is because of anger and frustrations which don't develop overnight. Most of the vociferous professors get engaged in the national politics than concentrating on teaching, although they have their own legitimate problems and limitations.

The scariest part is that it is becoming difficult for our graduates to get the job of their kind. One has to be extremely lucky and powerful to get a decent job. The government is not genuinely committed to address the problems of this intellectual community. However, the privatization of education has created some academic jobs. Most of these institutions, directly or indirectly, run by the academia who voice for academic honesty, freedom, good working environment, remuneration, democratic administration and creation of better institutions of teaching and learning. Unfortunately, under their institutions, the hard-earned degree of our graduates gets exploited as they work for a meager salary and under an unfavorable environment where there is no academic freedom. The government's inability to monitor the privatization of education has turned these vociferous institutions into educated thugs. Thus the government's ignorance towards these anomalies in the education sector—the painful exploitation, frustration and uncertainty among intellectuals and students etc—results in what is called the brain drain, a huge loss to the nation.

Hollow myth and KU

the hollow myth
of effective leadership
is nothing else than family dictatorship
lies in the center, greed and avarice
of a saint, who is more a vendor
than an educationist whose heart is tender
common desire of academic excellence,
academic freedom and fraternity
is what binds
even letting us conquer
manipulated minds

the hollow myth
of cowardice and timidity
is nothing else than propoganda
of the dictators of both Myanmar and KU
like those monks in red robe
faculties, staffs and students
from across the globe
has said in unison
the vendor is shedding crimson

the hollow myth
of excellence and quality
is nothing else than a sugarcoat
to bring in the students
where they will be doomed to
emulate a murderer,molester, and abuser
to make themselve societies' turncoat

the hollow myth
of a saint
is nothing else than a paint
to cover the real face
of a heinous,corrupt, nepotistic
who has to academia of Nepal
already brought enough disgrace

the hollow myth
of a good management
is nothing else than a display
where both the thug and his goons
are playing a possum's play
to reject the voice
to reject the choices
only to bring a real crises.

Suresh Raj,Bihar Police and Than Shwe

How mercilessly Bihar Police of Bhagalpur district thrashed the chain snatcher has recently created huge outcry in India. For the petty crime of looting someone, it is understandable that public would express their outrage. However, if the Policemen also comes into their aid and try to mete out inhuman treatment, eyebrows are likely to be raised. Whatever happened in Bhagalpur,Bihar of India is an expression of mob-mentality of unruly and uneducated people. Such a mob mentality should never be borne by any public servant. This is why the policemen in question were immidiately suspended for their complicity in committing a crime against a petty criminal. Bhagalpur incident clearly indicates that our society, be it in India or be it in Nepal is not ready to accept mob mentality on the part of the so called protector.

Prof.Dr. Suresh Raj Sharma, who has been periodically writing in both vernacular and English dailies should, by any standard, be a protector. His continuation as VC of KU for last 15 years and his having spent his entire life in academic sector invariably bestows that position to him. But, exactly like that Bhagalpur policemen, Suresh Raj Sharma has also failed to do his duty. He has failed to accept what the soceity and academic fraternity has tacitly accorded to him. Rather, he has intentionally sided with murderers, mandales, and goondas in hope of protracting his stay in KU. The Bhagalpur policemen apparently got carried away by public emotion. He could have felt that siding with the public in committing a crime would elevate his position. So, he committed a crime against a criminal to loose his job.

But why Suresh Raj is behaving more ruthlessly than the Bhagalpur policeman. It is perplexing. Given his free stint so far, Suresh Raj would have lost nothing had he tried to emerge as a real guardian. He would have gained much support and appreciation. It would,in turn, have made people stand up and request him for continuation till his death. A man who openly claims to have created KU and established a new educational approach in Nepal is now relying on support of a bunch of thugs, goons, hooligans, mandales and murderers. Why Suresh Raj? Why?

This clearly shows that Suresh Raj has something to hide. We can not say that faculties, staffs and students who are demanding their say in governance have some ulterior motives. Because, in comparison, by making demands for a common say through common forum like KUPA,KUSA and SWC, no body is likely to gain anything. People, who at the helm of the affairs in these organization, may gain some prominence, but they are not likely to gain either deanship or registrarship or VCship. Definitely, all of us would gain better academic environment if voices of KUPA,KUSA and Students' prevail in KU. In this situation, the only guilty party, who has something to hide, conceal and grab, is invariably Suresh Raj Sharma.

Perhaps, knowing very well, what he has to conceal and whom he has to promote to meet that end, Suresh Raj has become more scheming and more ruthless. Unlike Bhagalpur policeman, who got carried away instantly, Suresh Raj is working with a design and motive. He is inciting people and he is mobilising goons. He wants to exhaust everyone who dares to speak up against his crimes and his corruption. And ultimately, he has tried to counter KUPA also by creating "Faculty Welfare Council." This is reminiscent of "State Law and Order Restoration Council" created by ruthless dictator of Myanmar, General Than Shwe. And this is what is making us as determined as Burmese to keep on resisting mandale Suresh Raj to usher in real academic environment in Kathmandu University.
