Reinstate Dr. Boris!
Recent movement in KU has been able to introduce the greatest change in KU. It is true that nepotistic regime of Suresh Raj and Sitaram could not be ousted for variety of reasons. Since Suresh Raj has well entrenched his position as the administrator of KU, and kept many of the so called political leaders in good humor by currying favors for them, it was natural that these political leaders might have tried to save Suresh Raj. Politicians, by their very nature, always support the people who are likely to help them financially. So, there is no merit accusing the politicians for saving the nepotistic regime of Suresh Raj Sharma. On the other hand, the politicians in our government should have at least pressurized Suresh Raj Sharma to function in an egalitarian manner.
There is not an iota of doubt that by sacking Dr. Boris, Suresh Raj wants to send a strong message down to the faculties that nobody who is critical of him can survive in KU. This mindset of Suresh Raj is totally against the essence of the University because questioning voices are always needed in the University for its own vibrancy. At the same time, Suresh Raj miscalculated that faculties are there in KU for the sake of livelihood. By depriving some faculties of their livelihoods, he wanted to issue threats to other faculties also. Moreover, Suresh Raj also failed to appreciate cataclysmic change in Nepal brought about by People's movement of 2063. Like in every walks of Nepal, it is natural on the part of the faculty members of KU to dream for an equal opportunity organization.
In view of having so many incompetent teachers in KU, only an upright and vocal faculty member like Dr. Boris Niraula inviting unjustified termination gives an insight into nepotistic mindsets of Suresh Raj Sharma and Sitaram Adhikary. Moreover, the highhanded manner in which Dr. Boris was terminated clearly indicated that Suresh Raj Sharma did really want to punish him for questioning his leadership qualities. Habitual to listening paeans and eulogies, Suresh Raj must have found righteous voice of Dr. Boris quite disturbing. He might have wondered how sons of Nepalis could raise question marks on his so-called "visionary " leadership in KU. Consequently, Suresh Raj went on to sack Dr. Boris while violating the basic norms of KU rules and regulations itself.
Dr. Boris was not only an upright faculty member but also an experienced one. He did not teach in KU for the first time and he has experience of teaching in many other universities. The academic freedom in any university lets its faculty members to formulate their own methodologies of teaching and researching. We can see that there are still many faculty members in KU who never comes prepared to class rooms and starts writing on white-board verbatim from the text-books or starts dictating the notes. Despite these avoidable practices, these faculty members are still enjoying the patronage of Suresh Raj Sharma and Sitaram Adhikary. But, in case of Dr. Boris Niraula, notwithstanding his innovative teaching methodology, he invited the wrath of Suresh Raj as he questioned the leadership qualities of Suresh Raj Sharma. His uprightness and questioning Suresh Raj is never unacademic and Suresh Raj must have taken them as quintessential features of the academia instead of sacking Dr. Boris Niraula.
Since KUPA and all other respected members therein are quite familiar with dictatorial termination of Dr. Boris Niraula, they must ensure that Dr. Boris is reinstated with due honors. It is true that no faculty member of KU should ever make mockery of teaching and learning in KU. Since the students are paying their own money for their studies, all the faculty members need to ensure that disruption of classes are avoided, as it would be against the interests of the students. If any member of KUPA is doing that then we must understand that these members of KUPA are no different from Manish Pokhrel who made fun of the entire academics in KU by making him available at other colleges of Kathmandu. Since KUPA members are different from Manish Pokhrel and Brijesh Adhikary, KUPA members should always take the welfare of the students as prime duty.
At the same time, KUPA as an organization needs to protect the dignity of all the members and must facilitate very good teaching-learning environment in KU. Till Dr. Boris Niraula and other respected teachers who were terminated after implementation of "7 year's Provision" are reinstated, it must be noted that the faculty members' lost honor and dignity has not been restored. Therefore, KUPA needs to translate the agreement with KU Management by ensure speedy reinstatement of Dr. Boris and all other victimized faculty members. KU Management also must realize that they can not play politics with the faculty members all the time. Neither they are allowed to attack the dignity of the faculty members. Therefore, KU management needs to rescind its earlier decisions and honor the agreement with KUPA.
