University professors resume hunger strike

KATHMANDU, Aug 27 - Agitating professors Sunday have gone on a full-fledged hunger strike citing government callousness towards their demands.
Prior to this, the agitating university professors who had been on a week-long hunger strike since July 24 had withdrawn their protests after the Minister for Sports and Education along with three chief whips of the ruling body had given an assurance to address their demands.
The agitating professors have been demanding the resignation of the officials and service commission members of the Mahendra Sanskrit, Purbanchal, Kathmandu, Lumbini Buddhist University.
According to the university professors, despite the Bill tabled at the parliament that allows for the direct removal of officers of the erstwhile royal regime, the government has still not relieved such officers of their posts, they have been compelled to resume their strike.
Previously, the agitating professors had met with the Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala and informed him about the resumption of their protest following the government's reluctance to address their demands.
According to a press release issued by the professors, the PM had expressed grave concerns over the Minister and the chief whips's negligence to address their demands.
