Are editors maintaining ethics?

Once there was an editor in a Nepal who was writing about virtues of democracy in Nepal. It seemed he had the remedy for every trick of Gyanendra. He appeared selfless in his edits, and was lecturing Gyanendra like a professor to his students. I was completely convinced with him until democracy was restored in Nepal. After Gyanendra’s defeat, he was elated and started behaving as if he was also above the laws. One day, I happened to read his e-mail to an accused of harassing a dalit employee to death. In his mail, he traded his influence as editor for an admission in some college. His mail got scattered in cyberspace; so did my respect for him and his ideas.

I realized that he was merely a charlatan that knows what others should do, but did not bother to realize his own immoral actions. This tendency of skillfully hiding one's own wickedness and liberally pointing out others' foibles, as exhibited by this editor has all of us on tenterhooks. In the process of civilization, we have learnt to read newspapers and believe in what editors write, but never bothered to ask ourselves level of honesty and integrity these editors maintain.

The abuse of influence discipline could be a perfect example. In the western countries, editors never use their position to trade publications with admission.. There is no moral ground to exercise self-aggrandizement of the editors. Here, however, every editor talks of long queue and pressure of articles and that means: "Watch out! I'm not delaying; you have to favor me to get favor from my side.” All the while, favor seekers, too, assert their positions and talk of long queue for admission in their campuses/universities/schools. In Nepal, if you try to enroll your not-so-bright wards, everybody connects and networks with their peers, colleagues and superiors, as they are worried about losing their admission. Very few editors have the sense to stop such practices and care for morality in our day-to-day lives.

The most glaring example that portrays our society's character is seen in the "secret dealings" of our editors. In order to pressurize the concerned party to fulfill one group's demands, we do not hesitate to kick on the beliefs of the millions of Nepalis who take their daily dosages of moral lessons from editorials. Moreover, in moral terms too, one editor's forsaking his conscience costs the publication valuable readers, not to talk about its long-term impacts on our societal credibility, and crusade against corruption, connection, networking and mafia raj.

This special supplement of the ChangeinKU being published after exposure of Mr. Praeek Pradhan,Editor of TKP, is not planned quite optimistically nor with a design. About six months ago, when we were bereaving martyrdom of our Buddhi Bahadur Bishwokarma, we were convinced that the justice would be brought to perpetrators of harassment-triggered suicide of an employee through sustained discussion in Media. We were eager to discuss openly to inform all and sundry how life-threatening has become academia in KU; so many of our contributors, supporters and friends decided to write to the editors, publish their write-ups and articles. And this is to help Nepali intelligentsia in taking right decisions vis-à-vis nepotism, corruption and use of brutal force of Suresh Raj Sharma.

However, the unfolding of the events in the last six months alone has been disheartening. The initial euphoria after the successful KU Movement was manipulated and forced to taper off. In the last one-week, many have asked a question to me, and I'm also asking myself: Are editors like Prateek Pradhan maintaining morality and journalistic values?

No.
They are not ethical. They will do anything for their benefit. Media is also under mafia control.

Good blog.

What Prateek did is an unethical behaviour. Many journalists now a days like to write or allow publications which suits their personal interests. If they are influenced, they stop paying attention to your articles/write-ups. Kantipur generally reports on all the issues. But, sometimes they do not write or publish newspapers.

After Buddhi sir's death, it was expected that they would publish that news. They had covered everything from the beginning. They published letters, they published termination of jobs by KU registrar and many other things.

However, from Buddhi sir's death onwards, they simply stopped everything. After Buddhi sir's harasment death, it now appears that accused Bhola Thapa must have used his connections and befriended Mr. Prateek Pradhan.

This blog and previous blog depicting secret trade off of publication with an admission clearly show that our Journalists are also like politicians.

Politicians speak anything that suits their interests. And our journalists write anything that suits them. At least with Prateek Pradhan, this was not expected. I used to highly regard his words.

Now, I even do not like to have a look at TKP and Kantipur.

Shame on these editors.

Prateek Pradhan knew your worst intention of demoralising the enlightened person Dr. Suresh Raj Sharma who created Kathmandu University where alongwith other about 500 personnel, you are working and arranging daily breads for your children. he also knew your intention of demolishing this university with vested interests. So, he left pleading for you idiots. It doesn't mean that who do not favour you are not morally strong people. Before questioning others moral please look into a mirror, how moral you are? You are piercing the plate in which you feed upon.

Dear Mr. 2nd Anonymous.

By reading your comment, I have a knack that you are either of the bootlickers who were recently promoted or you share some relations with Suresh Raj.

Regarding enlightened state of Suresh Raj; let me elaborate;
(i) appointment of relatives in KU
(ii) insatiated desire to stick to VC's chair
(iii) resorting to corruption
(iv) throttling freedom and organizations
(v) used force, goons and killed an employee

Having seen all these activities of Suresh Raj, there is no doubt how enlightened Suresh Raj is. For people like you, who receive bread and butter by licking his boots, his crimes are pardonable. Rather you claim that he is enlightened.

Now, regarding credit for creation of KU, he deserves some praise but that praise is also evaporated now. This is because of his remaining in chair. It showed that his creation was with selfish purpose.

Now regarding providing means of sustenanace or livelihood by KU jobs to 500 employees, you are insulting all of these employees. Each of the employees joined the insitution expecting fair and just system. Had they wanted or if they want, they can join any other organization for their livelihood. Except relations and relatives of Suresh Raj, Sitaram and Bhadraman, most of the employees are competent. So, you should not talk like Suresh Raj doing favour to employees of KU. KU employees are getting money for the service they provice. It is in valuation of the service only. If they provide the same service elsewhere, there also they can get as much salary.

So, this way of talking smacks of feudal way of thinking and it is better not to talk of these things amongst us here.

Most of the members, who are involved in KU movement, has the best of intentions of KU. As Suresh Raj is fast loosing his grounds, he is demoralising every righteous faculty member by slandering them and accusing them of subverting the academia. Accusations of Suresh Raj and his cronies are baseless because only people who are involved in corruption, nepotism and rowdyism are demolishing the university. Not the ones who are demanding to stop corruption, nepotism and barbarism. So, it is clear to even a layman that most of the agitating members are correct and the people who are destroying KU are Suresh Raj, Bhadrman, Pushparaj, Sitaram and so on.

As regards Mr. Prateek Pradhan, so called ethical editor, we have already read what has transpired between him and Mr. Bhola Thapa. There is no doubt now that Mr. Prateek sided himself with Suresh Raj and Bhola Thapa as he has to curry some favours from them. It is not a strange phenomenon in Nepal to ignore right voices for personal benefits. And Prateek Pradhan is also no different. So, you are right that now onwards Mr. Pradhan should look at mirror and ask himself",what is morality?"
