Imprudent acts of Suresh Raj

It is disturbing to note that 2 employees of KU (Mr. Amit Verma and Mr. Surendra K.C.), who earn their bread working in KU, have lost jobs. And, it is equally unfortunate that such a situation has emerged at a time when people are aspiring to create a new Nepal that guarantees organizational freedom, social justice, appropriate employment, and economic opportunities to all. What is still saddening is that the situation has emerged due to the irresponsible actions of Suresh Raj Sharma, VC of KU. Suresh Raj has frequently touted excellence and quality education as pillars of KU. On the other hand, he has been committing gross abuse of authority by imposing blatant nepotism in KU in addition to unheard of corruption in academic fraternity. While agreeing to pressures of ailing PM G.P. Koirala to grant affiliations in contravention of the recommendations of KU Senate Board, Suresh Raj has managed to buy some more time for his Vice Chancellorship in KU.

We at ChangeinKU have always supported the voice which called for better and employee-friendly working conditions. It is the basic responsibility of employers and administrators to provide work-friendly environment with ensured freedom. Judicious and timely payment of perspiration that workers, employees and faculties put in is the fundamental right of the workers. Demands for organizational rights, freedom of expression and academic freedom are globally agreed upon practices. However, a forceful and coercive methods to silence the just voices of the Staffs and faculties of KU cannot be a prudent act. For, it destroys academic environment, and puts both the excellence and quality education at risk. This is exactly what has happened in case of Kathmandu University. At a time when Nepali students are going abroad for higher education, shrinking enrollments for various programs of KU is going to make a dent in KU's financial conditions also. The forceful termination of the staffs is likely to send wrong signals to ordinary Nepalis. Given the past experience of how Suresh Raj forced one Dalit employee, Late Buddhi Bahadur Vishwakarma to commit suicide, it is likely that he may persist with his bloodthirsty approach in KU. In such difficult times for the employees of KU, everyone must be aware of the situation that can invite a long term implication and destroy the reputation of KU for ever. We sincerely request 8 political parties and Government of Nepal not to trust Dr. Suresh Raj Sharma and initiate an inquiry into suicide of Dalit Buddhi Bahadur Vishwakarma.

Hence, the Government must prudently exercise just measures, whereby the employees as well as students can sigh a breath of relief. The government must identify the problems that has led to such rampant nepotism, corruption and criminalization of academic environment of KU. Before KU's reputation is mired in another controversy, the government of Nepal must sack Suresh Raj Sharma and his corrupt administration in KU. The main stake in the process, however, must be taken by Ministry of Education. As a coordinating agency, it must facilitate and guide immidiate termination of Suresh Raj Sharma with a constitution of judicial probe committee to find out what were the threats issued by Suresh Raj Sharma through his dean Dr. Bhola Thapa to Late Buddhi Bahadur Bishwakarma. Whether the party is responsible or not for the death of a dalit can be found out by judicial actions only. Time has come for the Government of Nepal to rise up to the task of ensuring better academic environment, safety of employee, end of Mafia Raj and termination of Nepotism in KU.
