Suresh Raj's route to VCship of KU
The tides in KU are changing. Our two protagonist—Staffs and faculties—who were once set against each other in KU, are not only growing closer but are also eager to fight Suresh Raj in his home turf. It's an opportunity for us in ChangeinKU to talk about main stakeholders of KU while accessing the rise of Suresh Raj in Nepali academia. We should not only confine to Suresh Raj Sharma after KU as his present day Mandale actions are integral part of his personality. Yes, we therefore must acknowledge that what Suresh Raj we are dealing with was produced and nurtured by Nepali Royal palace. KU’s long-term policies cannot be guided by a vested interest of a few mandales in the guise of academic businessmen. Instead, it should be based on a long-term academic vision that fosters a broad-based democratic growth and supports the academic freedom of many, not the affluence of a few like Suresh Raj and Sitaram.
Suresh Raj was originally a mediocre student who was at odds with his study. He came to Kathmandu on 2013 B.S. after many attempts on his S.L.C. examination. How and why Suresh Raj had to struggle with his S.L.C. is best known to him, however Suresh Raj hates S.L.C. system and because of that he frequently claims that S.L.C. system is not required in our country. People who know his life history generally gets confused as to why Suresh Raj opposes S.L.C. system in Nepal. Is it a failed student, who finds S.L.C. nightmarish, speaking or a cunning educationist who likes to develop educational policy of Nepal around the periphery of his educational history?
Suresh Raj, after coming to Kathmandu in 2013 B.S., was desperately looking for some connections. Like in his S.L.C., his wisdom did not support him in his I.Sc. also. However, from M.Sc. onwards Suresh Raj was able to prove his mettle as a student. People who are acting at the behest of Suresh Raj must know that it took Suresh Raj more than 6 years to complete his Bachelor in 2019 and that is also with great difficulty. Suresh Raj sympathizers may cite various reasons, but it is useless to claim that he is meritorious student from the beginning. All his contemporaries know how poor he was in academics.
Irrespective of his poor academic background, Suresh Raj continued his tryst with academic field. As he was not good academically, he started tampering with academic practices. Suresh Raj after his M.Sc. in India started taking tuitions heavily and went on to collect large sum of money. Suresh Raj has himself claimed that his house in Baneshore was erected by whatever money he earned through tuitions. This shows that from the beginning the role of Suresh Raj was against academic norms and values.
An interesting issue related with Suresh Raj’s journey in Nepali academic field is related with one name “Surendra K.C.” Suresh Raj was student of Prof. Surendra Singh K.C. who later went on to become registrar of T.U. As he liked Suresh Raj very much, he helped Suresh Raj to enter into TU also. After entering into TU also, Suresh Raj persisted with his Tuition classes and in one such classes, he had his student who happened to be younger brother of Mi.Su. Narayan Prasad Shrestha. Throughl, that student, Suresh Raj got into contact with the Palace and started becoming pro-palace educationist of Nepal.
In a number of occasions, whenever we said that Suresh Raj is a royalist and mandale, people did not believe us. They saw his silver hair and listened to his non-stop self-praise as the greatest living educationist of Nepal and expected that they would get his favor for one or another reason. As Suresh Raj has already become an icon of excellence in Nepal, people forgot to look into how he behaved during his students days, how he behaved in his initial days as teachers and how he went into contact with the royal palace. Suresh Raj has licked the boots throughout his life while turning himself into servants of every powerful person from Hukke and Baithake of Royal palace to political leaders. He knows very well how to please the masters. And he also knows very well how to throttle the righteous voices in academia.
This upbringing of Suresh Raj is now destroying KU. His attacks on faculties and staffs of KU are nothing but a Mandale attack, which moves according to feudal notions. Many journalists, intellectuals and academicians claim that Suresh Raj is not a mandale. Then, we must say that either Suresh Raj favors these people or these people are ignorant of academic practices. While attacking faculties and staffs of KU, who are demanding organizational rights, many stooges of Suresh Raj has said that we are turning KU into TU. Mandales have always despised students’ power and the chief reason is that they consider students are the harbinger of abolition of Panchayati system and that of Nepalis monarchy.
